Who loves art?? ONLY EVERYONE! Now you can pick up an original piece to display in your home or office.
Come and join us to raise funds for the GSDSS in a fun and artistic way. This will be our first annual Art Exhibition Fundraising Event!
On June 24, 2023 from 3:00-6:00 PM, the GSDSS center will host an open house event, serving wine and other refreshments, while you browse the artwork created by local artists, as well as the GSDSS members themselves!
Our members had the BEST time creating special pieces just for you. These art pieces include paintings, drawings, mosaics, jewelry and more!
BUT, it gets better! Not only do you browse the art while you mingle and nibble- you have the opportunity to purchase these unique art pieces to decorate your home or office, while supporting our organization’s endeavors to enhance the lives of our community members who have Down syndrome through the Grand Strand Down Syndrome Society’s programs and services.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Art will be on display at the center. If you see a piece you like, simply purchase it with one of our staff members and take it home on the same night! (You may pay via credit card or cash, but no change will be available).
All art pieces will have a suggested starting price, but if you feel compelled to pledge more for your piece, all donations are always appreciated!
We will have a few pieces available in silent auction, in which the winner will be announced at the end of the night. (If the winner is off site during the announcement, they will be allowed to pick it up at a later date that they shall arrange with our staff).

The Goal is Understandable Speech: How do we get There?
Summary
What makes speech difficult to understand? How can we help children with Down syndrome develop speech that is easier to understand? There are many factors that affect speech intelligibility in children and adults with Down syndrome but the occurrence and combination of factors are different for each person. Dr. Kumin will present a framework that can be used for identifying, analyzing, and treating the factors that affect speech intelligibility for your child, e.g. rate, articulation, oral motor skills and childhood apraxia of speech. Attendees will learn how to write IEP goals that target factors affecting speech intelligibility in your child for different ages and stages and how to develop a home-school communication plan and to use home activities to practice speech skills.
